Choosing the right day for a Summer Fayre in the UK is the equivalent of sticking a pin in the line-up for the Grand National or finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. This year was no exception, although we should have remembered the glorious day we had in 2007.

2008 was the year when we had a wonderful week in early May and then a beautiful week in late September. Forget the rest although the weather leading unto and including the weekend of the 8th of August was itself miserable and yes unforgettable. We could argue however that our timing was perfect as we at least enjoyed a three and a half hour window of opportunity, almost rain free from about 1.30 onwards.

As always QEP volunteers were on the ball from 7.30 onwards and we opened for business on time. Thousands of leaflets had been delivered before hand and Eagle Radio had spread the word over the airwaves. Strangely out of the mists came families and friends from far and wide and localised showers failed to deter them from enjoying themselves. This year we were blessed with the help and participation of staff from both Budgens and Esporta who formed the core of entrants for our Dodge Ball and Tug of War competitions. Teams from Stoughton Massive and QEP/Gnoll house were also on hand and the Village Green rang out with the cries of the competitors and their supporters. QEP/Gnoll House won the Tug of War and Budgens the Dodge Ball.

As always Ann Milton was there to cheer on the teams and visit all the various stands and purchase a gift or two from the various craft stalls. The Deputy Mayor Pauline Searle was also supportive of our efforts and wore her regalia even in the most inclement weather. The Police, Fire Brigade, Guildford Climate Change, RockWatch, and the Kent Geologist’s Group also entertained a crowd that fully reflected the fact that the Queen Elizabeth Park Fayre is a firm Fixture on the Guildford Calendar. Hopefully next year will be warm and dry. This the marquees took over a week to dry!

From Sheila, Police Community Support Officer:

Here are the thoughts for an event that I would dearly love to see happen. I feel this will really embrace the Stoughton Community. Please can you see if you can spare the time to come to the meeting as above or/and anyone that you think would be interested in helping to put this project together.

Here is the general idea:

The stroll – about will take in particular interesting locations. At each location will be a “station” where there will be person(s) who can talk about whatever there is or was at that site. Mostly history items e.g. Cardwell Keep- old photographs on display when this was an army camp.

This, hopefully will give young people a sense of identity in the area in which they live, and new residents a chance to walk around their area with a purpose. There will be 3 different routes to cater for all abilities.

Suggested areas for the strollabout will be talked about on the meeting evening. Emmanuel church is holding a flower festival that day so it would be good to bring the festival in, as a “station”. The common at Rydeshill would be a good station as well with Mark Havler.

Other events we may consider is a few other type things like a competition for the children, miniature garden on a plate, funny rhyme, colouring, bake a sponge for the men etc and afternoon tea for the seniors.

How about a fantastic Barn Dance in the evening?

These are some ideas that we could do but we need your presence! Feel free to discuss it in the Forum, or send an email through the Contact Form.

Thank you.
